Readability (These comments were shared by Julie Coiro from the University of Connecticut)

1.Readability Statistics Tool
(http://www.interventioncentral.org/htmdocs/tools/okapi/okapi.shtml) You can first cut and paste a section of text from a website into their form and then the tool estimates readability using the Spache (Grades 1-3) or Dale-Chall (Grades 4 and up) readability formula. This tool works very much like the readability calculator within Microsoft Word, though this is web-based. The tool also provides a way to create CBA Reading Probes, which is a nice feature too. Visit the homepage at http://www.interventioncentral.org/tools.shtml for some other nice interactive tools for creating graphs, progress charts and analyzing multiplying test scores.

2. Reading Level Calculator at http://linda-andrews.com/readability_tool.htm that uses the SMOG
readability formula which is common among editors.

3. If you do a search using KidsClick search engine (http://www.kidsclick.org) which indexes about 2,000+ children's
educational websites, the results are reported back with grade levelranges of K-2, 3-6, or 7+ which are pretty accurate (though the list of sites that appear are limited to those within the KidsClick database).

4. You may also be interested in the article about Readability Issues to Consider http://www.timetabler.com/reading.html, which outlines other variables besides "text level" that influences the actual " readability" of information for students.
